Ahead of the WNBA draft on Monday, tickets for Clark’s presumed team, the Indiana Fever, were selling for a premium on sites like StubHub.
The WNBA’s 2024 draft won’t occur until 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, yet Caitlin Clark’s influence on the league is already palpable.
This impending draft pick is causing significant waves. Ticket prices for the Fever are skyrocketing, with the secondary market already active ahead of the 4 p.m. start for single-game ticket sales today. Floor seats on StubHub are fetching up to $515, and the average resale price for the 2024 season has tripled compared to last year, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Clark’s imminent arrival is also benefiting other teams. Ticket sales for games against the Fever are prompting adjustments. For instance, the Las Vegas Aces are relocating their July 2 matchup with Indiana to T-Mobile Arena, adding an additional 7,100 seats for fans.
Despite the Fever’s dismal record last year, the team is poised for widespread exposure. Thirty-six out of the 40 Fever games will be broadcast nationally or streamed this year, more than any other team.
ESPN stands to gain from Clark’s popularity, broadcasting eight Fever games this season and hosting the WNBA Draft, which last year drew a record viewership of 572,000.
Amazon, ABC, and CBS may also see increased ratings from airing Fever games, while NBA TV will broadcast a significant number of games, potentially driving more subscriptions with Clark’s arrival.
Clark’s expanding presence isn’t limited to the court; she’s also securing sponsorship deals thanks to NCAA rule changes allowing athletes to profit while in school. With deals already in place with Nike and State Farm Insurance, her annual earnings sit at $818,000, a figure likely to grow as her celebrity ascends in the league.
While Clark shines as the draft’s headline act, she’s not the only star in the spotlight tonight. LSU’s Angel Reese is a top prospect expected to land with the Chicago Sky, while South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso is projected to join the Los Angeles Sparks as the fourth pick.
What makes the draft thrilling, whether it’s for the WNBA or NFL, is the unpredictability. While Clark is a surefire first pick, the challenges awaiting her in the professional realm might differ from what’s expected.
