Felicitaciones are in order for King Felipe and Infanta Sofia, as the Spanish royals cheered their national team to Euros victory in Berlin on Sunday 14 July. The father-daughter duo were ecstatic in the Olympiastadion’s VIP box, but it was heartbreak for Prince William and Prince George, with England facing their second consecutive defeat in the tournament finals.

Felipe, 56, and Sofia, 17, donned patriotic red to support the Spanish side, who claimed a 2-1 triumph over the Three Lions in the final minutes of the game. Before kick off, the pair posed with the Prince of Wales and Prince George, with the royals looking the picture of friendly rivalry – ‘may the best team win’ wrote William on social media.

And, unfortunately for England, win they did, as the Spanish side outplayed Harry Kane’s team, despite a tantalising moment of glory in Cole Palmer’s stunning first half equaliser. King Felipe looked tense as the Three Lions drew level, and the anxiety was palatable as the clock ticked down. There was triumph for the King and his daughter as Spain sealed the deal with a last minute goal, leaving Prince William and Prince George heartbroken by their side. Sunday marked a record-breaking fourth victory for the side at the European Championships.

The Spanish royals are known to be avid football fans. King Felipe is honorary president of Atlètico Madrid, and Infanta Sofia flew to Australia alongside her mother, Queen Letizia, to watch Spain triumph at the Women’s World Cup in 2023 – once again beating England.

And on Sunday, while the British royals commiserated with the England players, King Felipe and Infanta Sofia beamed alongside their own national team, brandishing the trophy in a hearty display of national pride while confetti scattered down onto the Olympiastadion pitch.

The Spanish royal family took to social media to celebrate the stunning victory. The official X account wrote: ‘EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS!!! You have been the best team, you have made us enjoy every game and all of Spain is proud of you.’

Prince William’s message after the final whistle was more subdued, offering a poignant message of optimism, comfort, and hope for the side’s future. ‘This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards @England,’ wrote the Prince of Wales.
