How to Make Cornish Pasty: A Traditional British Delight

Cornish pasties are a beloved dish from Cornwall, England, known for their delicious golden crust and savory filling. They make for a perfect snack or meal, especially when freshly baked. Here’s how you can recreate this classic recipe at home:

Ingredients:

300g shortcrust pastry (store-bought or homemade)
200g beef, finely diced
200g potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes
100g onion, finely chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
Butter or oil for frying

Instructions:

    Prepare the Filling:

Heat a little butter or oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the diced onions and cook until softened and translucent.
Add the diced beef to the pan and cook until browned on all sides.

Add the diced potatoes to the pan and cook for a few more minutes until they start to soften.
Season generously with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.

    Assemble the Pasties:

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
Roll out the shortcrust pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 3-5mm thick.
Using a saucer or small plate (about 20cm in diameter), cut out circles from the pastry.

    Fill and Shape:

Place a spoonful of the filling on one half of each pastry circle.

Fold the pastry over to enclose the filling, forming a half-moon shape.
Crimp the edges firmly together to seal the pasties. You can use a fork to press down and create a pattern along the edge.

    Bake:

Place the pasties on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops of the pasties with a little beaten egg for a golden finish (optional).
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the pasties are golden brown and cooked through.

    Serve and Enjoy:

Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
Cornish pasties can be enjoyed warm or cold, making them perfect for picnics or as a hearty meal.

Notes:

Cornish pasties are traditionally eaten with the hands, but they can also be served with a side salad or vegetables for a more substantial meal.
Feel free to adjust the filling ingredients according to your taste preferences, but the classic combination of beef, potatoes, and onions with a touch of seasoning is what makes these pasties irresistible.
