Recently, Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller shed light on a lesser-known aspect of Clark’s game during an interview. Miller praised Clark’s ability to convert contested shots with the same ease as open looks, emphasizing that her shooting prowess often overshadows her exceptional playmaking abilities. Miller remarked, “There are shooters who need screens to get open. You can set a screen for Caitlin; Caitlin doesn’t need one. The underrated aspect of her game is her passing ability.”
Clark’s playmaking skills have been evident since her freshman year at Iowa, where she averaged 7.1 assists per game, steadily increasing to 8.9 assists in her senior year. Despite averaging over 25 points per game in college, her passing directly contributed to at least 14 points per game. In her WNBA debut season, Clark continues to impress with her playmaking, leading the league with 7.8 assists per game and accumulating 194 assists so far. She is poised to break the rookie record of 225 assists held by four-time All-Star Ticha Penicheiro.
However, Clark faces challenges in efficiency, leading the league with 5.6 turnovers per game. While not all turnovers are solely her responsibility, videos circulating among fans show her teammates dropping catchable passes. To solidify her status as an elite playmaker, Clark must improve her ball security and decision-making. Her ability to make flashy passes and draw multiple defenders, coupled with her vision on the court, sets her apart.
As Clark continues to refine her game, her potential to become the WNBA’s premier playmaker is undeniable. With determination and development, she is on track to redefine the league’s standards of excellence in both scoring and playmaking.
