The Fever forward’s record-breaking performance against the Dallas Wings revived the controversy.
Joe Pompliano doesn’t forgive USA Basketball for Caitlin Clark snub.
The Olympic team’s snub towards Caitlin Clark continues to raise eyebrows. The Indiana Fever guard has just given a record performance against the Dallas Wings, making her absence from the team that will play in Paris 2024 more noticeable, as businessman and influencer Joe Pompliano highlighted.
The former Ohio Hawkeye improves exponentially with each passing game. His recent demonstration against the Wings is proof of this. Beyond the 24 points, six rebounds, and her 52.6 field goal percentage, Clark passed for an impressive 19 assists.
With this figure, Clark broke the record of 18 that Chicago Sky’s Courtney Vandersloot set in 2020 precisely against the Fever. As expected, Clark’s record boosted her chances of becoming the 2024 Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Pompliano could not help but notice both facts and did not hesitate to blast those in charge of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) for leaving Clark out.
Pompliano’s indignation
In a recent post on his account on X (formerly Twitter), the businessman claimed, “Caitlin Clark now has the third-best odds to win WNBA MVP after setting a league record with 19 assists in a single game. The decision to keep her off the Olympic team is indefensible at this point.”
USA Basketball announced the roster of the Olympic team on June 11, and the controversy was inevitable and immediate. Clark’s absence generated protests from all fronts, and the controversy has only grown since then.
Pompliano recognized that A’ja Wilson, center of the Las Vegas Aces, is the top candidate for MVP and clarified that he intended to highlight that “Clark is already one of the league’s best players –and when you combine that with his popularity– she should be on the team.”
Clark’s numbers
Caitlin’s actions support Pompliano’s statements. Before the Olympic team announcement, the Fever guard averaged 15.6 points and 6.4 assists in 11 games. In the 13 games after her Olympic snub, she is averaging 17.9 points and 9.1 assists.

Despite her constant improvement, Clark has not lost her ground. After her record-breaking performance against Dallas, the former Hawkeye simply said, “I just try to set my teammates up for success. I think at times I can almost over-pass, and there could have been a few times that instead of passes that lead to turnovers, I can probably shoot the ball.”
Caitlin Clark is a work in progress. With each game she passes, her skills improve, and if she continues with this pace, she will surely be the star of the USWNT at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
