A documentary depicting the journey of filmmaker Kit Vincent and his family following his diagnosis with an incurable brain tumour is slated for release in cinemas. Born in Bournemouth, Vincent received the devastating diagnosis at the age of 24 in 2023. Titled “Red Herring,” the documentary chronicles the family’s efforts to navigate through the challenges posed by his illness. Nominated for a British Independent Film Award and winning the Best UK Feature at the Raindance Film Festival, “Red Herring” features intimate interviews with Vincent’s separated parents and his girlfriend, capturing their lives in the aftermath of his cancer diagnosis. Vincent expressed his desire for the film to serve as a “celebration of life,” highlighting the family’s coping mechanism of finding humor even in the face of adversity. He explained that utilizing a camera to facilitate difficult conversations helped him process his emotions effectively.
‘Resources and skills’
Throughout the filmmaking process, Mr. Vincent underwent regular scans to monitor his condition. Although a course of radiotherapy has stabilized his health status, he admitted to becoming accustomed to living on a month-to-month basis. Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude and a sense of privilege for having the resources and abilities to transform his experience into something constructive. Recognizing that many individuals facing similar circumstances cope differently or may struggle to cope at all, he acknowledged the diverse ways people navigate through such challenges.
“I consider it a privilege and a joy to see whatever comes from this film. I am immensely thankful for everyone who watches it.”
Red Herring will be screened in cinemas across London, Sheffield, Brighton, and Cambridge starting from the beginning of May.
