On December 9th, Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani officially joined the Los Angeles Dodgers after signing a 10-year contract worth $700 million.
It can be said that the player from Japan holds the highest-valued contract in Major League Baseball (MLB).
“This is a historic contract for a truly unique superstar,” said Nez Balelo, Shohei Ohtani’s representative.
The average annual salary for the Japanese baseball superstar is $70 million, nearly double his previous $42.3 million salary with the Los Angeles Angels.
With numerous outstanding achievements in MLB history, Shohei Ohtani has become one of the highest commercial value athletes in the world, attracting massive ticket sales and huge sponsorships from many brands.
Shohei Ohtani (born 1994) is a baseball player born in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Before leaving the Los Angeles Angels to join the Dodgers with a record-breaking contract, Shohei Ohtani played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Japanese professional baseball league (NPB).
In October 2016, Shohei Ohtani set a record for the fastest pitch in NPB history with a speed of 165 km/h. In 2017, the 1994-born athlete won the AL Rookie of the Year 2018 award.
Shohei Ohtani is the first player in MLB history to be named to the All-Star team as both a pitcher and a batter. He is also considered to have better skills than the American baseball legend Babe Ruth.
Shohei Ohtani won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the American league in 2021 and 2023. Earlier this year, at the World Baseball Cup held in Miami (USA), Shohei Ohtani and the Japanese national team became champions with a 3-2 victory over the host team.
Standing at an impressive height of 1.93 meters, the Japanese athlete is one of the most outstanding players in the professional league in both pitching and hitting roles.
In addition to his exceptional gameplay, Shohei Ohtani also possesses an impressive physique. He is often compared by fans to a figure “straight out of a comic book.”
It can be said that his exceptional talent on the field, clean personal life, and stylish appearance are factors that helped the athlete secure a record-breaking contract in the sports world.
“Until the last day of my playing career, I want to continue to strive not only for the Dodgers but also for the baseball community as a whole,” Shohei Ohtani shared on his personal Instagram account after signing the $700 million contract
