Edwards, of Kingston, Ont., goes to Washington Mystics as No. 6 WNBA draft pick.
Canadian basketball star Aaliyah Edwards is on her way to the WNBA, fulfilling a childhood dream that her high school coach, Karlyn Pixley, always believed she would achieve.
For Pixley, who serves as the athletic director at Frontenac Secondary School in Kingston and was Edwards’ former coach, witnessing her protege’s journey to the WNBA was a deeply emotional moment.
“I did [get emotional],” Pixley revealed in a conversation with As It Happens host Nil Köksal. “It’s so exciting. Like, when you see Aaliyah play and you know her personally, you know the time and the effort that she’s put into herself and her teammates and really anything she does.”
Pixley recounted an early conversation with Edwards back in Grade 9 when she asked about her aspirations. Edwards, with a determined smile, expressed her dream of playing in the WNBA—a dream she has now turned into reality.
“When you see Aaliyah play and you know her personally, you know the time and the effort that she’s put into herself and her teammates and really anything she does.”
Pixley never doubted Edwards’ ability to achieve her dreams. From the moment she entered the school, it was clear that Edwards possessed a special talent, coupled with unwavering support from her family.
“We always hoped that her dreams would come true, because if anybody deserves that, she does,” Pixley remarked. “Like, we always say good things happen to good people, and Aaliyah really is just one of the best.”
Edwards’ journey to the WNBA was a collaborative effort, with her mother playing a pivotal role in her development. Pixley shared her admiration for Edwards’ humility and sportsmanship, noting how she graciously applauded every player chosen before her during the draft.
Reflecting on the reaction within the school community, Pixley described an atmosphere of excitement and pride. The girls’ basketball program at Frontenac Secondary School had been avidly following Edwards’ career, and the news of her WNBA draft selection sparked widespread celebration among students.
As Edwards embarks on the next chapter of her basketball journey, she carries with her the support and admiration of her former coach, teammates, and school community—a testament to her talent, determination, and unwavering commitment to her dreams.
In a standout moment, University of Connecticut’s Aaliyah Edwards soared above Iowa opponents during a Final Four college basketball game. Reflecting on this milestone, I’m hopeful for the future of women’s sports. Aaliyah, alongside other inspiring athletes, serves as a role model for young girls. With their growing prominence, equal stardom and pay seem attainable goals. The momentum of progress is unstoppable, building upon the success of household names like Aaliyah in the WNBA.
