The ridiculous and childish look

Jojo Siwa is taking a page out of Miley Cyrus’ book.

The 21-year-old singer is leaving her Dance Moms past behind and embarking on a new era. In addition to releasing more mature music, Siwa is also expanding her style, taking direct inspiration from Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz aesthetic circa 2013.

The influence was undeniable during the star’s appearance at Trixie Mattel’s Pride Disco show at New York City’ Central Park on Saturday, June 29. Siwa took the stage dressed in a red, silver and black bra with a teddy bear head over each breast. She also wore matching hot pants, red boots and a headband made of teddy bears.

During the show, fans captured Siwa halting the performance to call out a heckler who booed her.

The former reality star was later seen wearing the same teddy bear look in the music video for her song “Guilty Pleasures,” which was released on July 12.

The ensemble is reminiscent of Cyrus’ famed performance at the 2013 MTV VMAs, where she donned a fuzzy gray teddy bear body suit. On stage, the Hannah Montana alum was joined by dancers dressed in bear costumes.

Siwa has spoken openly about taking inspiration from Cyrus’ career, specifically her pivot from Disney Channel star to raunchy pop singer.

“When I was 8 is when Miley had her Bangerz moment and I was like, ‘All I want is to have that one day.’ I want that,” Siwa told Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast in April 2024.

“Honestly since I was 15 my whole inner circle has been talking about it and getting excited for it,” Siwa continued. “And then two years ago is when I started writing new music. I got out of my Nickelodeon music contract.”

Cyrus, now 31, reflected on her “controversial” VMAs outfit in her 2023 installment of British Vogue‘s Life in Looksvideo series. The costume, she said while looking directly at the camera, “was extremely controversial and made a lot of people angry. I repeat, this teddy bear costume made a lot of people angry.”

She also explained the backstory behind the look. “This was inspired by a Todd James sculpture that I had fallen in love with. The bear reminded me of myself for some reason, I thought it was beautiful,” Cyrus shared.
