Reports suggest that LeBron James may seek a no-trade clause in his next contract negotiation with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, James is inclined to opt out of his contract for the 2024–25 season to ensure the inclusion of this clause, which is a priority for him.
“I think LeBron is going to opt out no matter what and the reason I think he’s going to opt out no matter what is because even if he just signs back for one year, the only functional way for LeBron to get a no-trade clause is to sign a new contract. If he extends the contract he is in, or picks up that option and extends onto it, he cannot get a no-trade clause. I think for several different reasons, LeBron would like, ask for, and probably be granted a no-trade clause. There may be some debate with him and the Lakers about whether he should get three years, or whether a third year would be a team option, or a player option, or not guaranteed, or whatever. I think there could be some interesting negotiations back and forth on that.” Brian Windhorst said.
James’ interest in a no-trade clause likely stems from recent trade rumors circulating in the NBA. Despite the Lakers’ recent success, including a commanding 116-97 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers where James contributed 24 points and 12 assists, securing their ninth win in ten games and propelling them to eighth place in the Western Conference standings, trade speculation persists.
At 39 years old, James continues to excel in his remarkable 21st NBA season, maintaining impressive averages of 25.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.2 rebounds over 68 games. However, the absence of Anthony Davis in the interior defense during the Lakers’ recent game against the Minnesota Timberwolves resulted in a challenging situation, with the Timberwolves seizing a 15-point lead in the second quarter. Davis’ performance in the first quarter, which included four points and four rebounds, underscores his importance to the team’s defensive stability.
