The Dallas Wings entered Wednesday night’s game against the Indiana Fever with the worst record in the WNBA, but pulled off an upset victory heading into the All-Star break. Doing so despite a historic night from Fever guard Caitlin Clark, Dallas was able to survive 24 points and 19 assists from the All-Star rookie.
In the final moments of this game, Fever head coach Christie Sides called timeout with 17.5 seconds remaining and her team trailing Dallas 101-93. The ESPN broadcast caught Caitlin Clark on the bench questioning this decision, clearly frustrated as she knew the game was out of reach:
As previously mentioned, Clark made WNBA history in this game, breaking the league’s single game assist record. It was a fantastic showing from Clark, who clearly cared more about the victory than her individual performance, but will someday be able to look back at this historic game.
This loss will sting for a bit, as the Fever certainly did not want to suffer a loss like this entering the break, but they are in the postseason picture as the WNBA standings sit currently. This has a lot to do with Clark’s play, even if they were unable to win her historic game on Wednesday.
It seems it will only be a matter of time until Clark breaks her own assists record and achieves the WNBA’s first 20-assist game. There were certainly opportunities for that to happen in this one, but Clark’s teammates missed some clean looks off her passes.
