Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA’s single-game assist record in her final game before the All-Star break, and then in the 2024 All-Star Game on Saturday night, she very nearly broke the single-game assist record for the contest.
While Clark only had four points on the night, she finished with ten assists, which is one short of Sue Bird’s record of 11 from the 2017 All-Star Game.
There’s a decent chance that Clark could have broken the record if she wanted to. After the game, though, she hilariously explained that she didn’t take the record away from Bird because they are friends with each other.
Given that she’s only a rookie, it seems like only a matter of time until Clark not only returns to the All-Star Game, but ends up breaking Bird’s record.
Clark is averaging 8.2 assists per game this season, but she really seemed to find her stride as a passer right before the All-Star break, as she averaged 11.9 assists per game in her final nine contests before the break.
The star Indiana Fever guard is already on pace to smash several assist records in just her first year in the league, and while Bird still holds the All-Star Game assist record, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Clark eventually ends up making it her own too.
