The WNBA has officially announced its agreement with ESPN, Amazon, and NBC for the league’s media rights. After its current deal expires following the 2025 season, the league is set to earn $2.2 billion in media revenue over 11 years.
An annual increase from $60 million to $200 million will bring a 233% rise in revenue for the WNBA.
Following the news of the WNBA’s deal, Caitlin Clark fans shared their initial reactions on social media. Due to her immense influence on women’s basketball, fans are demanding that Clark receive proper compensation for her efforts in growing the game.
Clark’s rookie contract comes in at $338,056 over four years. In 2028, Clark will become a restricted free agent, giving her the opportunity to negotiate a higher salary with the change in media rights after her rookie deal expires.
Clark’s annual salary currently stands at $76,535. While she’s helped bring millions of viewers to the league, the rookie out of Iowa hasn’t received any sort of wage boost.
WNBA fans took to social media to express their thoughts on how the new deal should benefit Clark.
“Caitlin Clark is rumored to receive the entire amount,” joked one fan.
“You guys can thank Caitlin Clark,” one said.
“Every single WNBA player needs to write a hand written thank you letter to Caitlin Clark,” said another.
The salary window could increase significantly, as the current range lies between $64,000 to $252,000 annually. The league’s new deal will help increase the salary cap, benefiting both players and teams.
Clark will be one of the first names on the board when increased salaries are debated. The viewership she’s brought to the league is unprecedented. Indiana recently played in the most-viewed WNBA game of the last 23 years.
They brought in over 2.3 million viewers in an 88-87 loss to Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on June 23.
Fans believe the shift in the league stems from Clark, and she should receive the praise for the latest $2.2 billion deal.
