Ice Spice says she wasn’t fully aware of everything that was going on when she attended the Super Bowl in February.
The Grammy nominee appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, July 26, when she spoke with host Jimmy Fallon about her debut album Y2K, her experience meeting Beyoncé and her time attending Super Bowl LVIII with friend and collaborator Taylor Swift.
During the interview, Fallon, 49, showed his audience a video of Ice Spice, 24, watching the big game with Swift, 34, before he asked if she was “confused” — as internet users suspected — given her surprised reaction to something Swift told her.
“I was incredibly confused. I’m still confused,” she said, before Fallon asked her if she knew “anything about football.”
“You know, that day I had a sense of knowing. But it just went away,” the “Deli” rapper joked, adding that she didn’t “have a clue” what was going on in the stadium.
“I honestly would just wait until Taylor cheered,” she added.
Ice Spice also recently caught up with Rolling Stone for the magazine’s September 2024 cover story, in which she dished about her relationship with friend and collaborator Swift. Also in the article, Swift herself spoke about what she admired about Ice as a fellow musician.
“I love when I meet a new artist who takes a keen interest in not just the music, but the music industry and how it works,” she said. “I’ve seen how our industry tries to convince artists that they’re better off just being creative and making music and letting the labels and the management do the rest.”
“Seeing Ice lean into the strategic, financial, and business aspects of her career is really exciting for me. The more artists learn about the inner workings of the music industry, the more power they can have in their creative world. I knew based on the questions she asked and the observations she made that she didn’t just want to be a passenger in her own career. She wanted to be the driver of it.”
Elsewhere in her latest Rolling Stone chat, Ice was asked about how “rude” it is that people think her friendship with Swift was for clout. “Why would she not want to be my friend?” she responded. “Taylor f—s with me. She’s so funny. I think our personalities mesh really well.”
She also detailed what it was like to find out Swift wanted to work with her on their 2023 “Karma” remix, and how her go-to producer RiotUSA recorded the moment in real time.
“I’m in my walk-in closet, and I’m like, ‘Bro, this is not real life.’ Riot definitely filmed it,” she said. “That’ll probably be in a documentary one day.”
Ice Spice’s debut album, Y2K, is now available to purchase and stream.
